While being part of the Middle Class, it was much harder to be taxed than those below in the social rank this included university graduates, bishops, and archbishops. Typically, the Merchant would also be found at the top of the Middle Class. In Chaucer's book, the Doctor was part of the Middle Class, more specifically, the top of the Middle Class. Just recently during this period, there was an emerging Middle Class, which we still have to this day. In Medieval England, there was the rich and the poor. During this time the Doctor would be seen wearing blood-red garments slashed with bluish-grey and lone with taffeta, also known as silk. According to the narrator of The Canterbury Tales, he, the Physician, rarely consults the Bible and has a very unhealthy love for money.
The Physician is said to keep himself in perfect health, but, however, his spiritual health has always been questioned. The Doctor has expertise in diagnosing the causes and finding cures for most ailments', too. He is supposedly a very well spoken character who is the best physician in Medieval England, using medieval practices such as blood-letting and keeping close ties with local apothecaries. The Doctor is a very knowledgeable man during this time, which happens to be Medieval England, 1066 A.D. The Doctor, dressed in his blood-red garments slashed with bluish-grey, lone with taffeta (silk). The Doctor was always helping the sick, both the poor and rich. His day-to-day life is very also very busy, just like the Doctors' we have today. He uses remedies like blood-letting and tricks and medicine from ancient Greek, Latin, and Arabic sources to help heal the ill.
The Doctor is part of the Middle class and is one of the best doctor's alive in Medieval England. The Doctor is one of the most important characters' in Geoffrey Chaucer's book The Canterbury Tales.
